Recycling is great and I am so glad to see so many recycling bins around the city. But if you take a peek inside one you will probably find a few items that don't belong. There is usually that one lazy person who spit out their gum in the bin and another well-intentioned person who puts their plastic cup into a 'bottles and cans only' bin. Most people would love to recycle but it is either not convenient or they aren't informed on what can and cannot be recycled. (see my previous post for guidelines in Cincinnati)
Today my roommates and I went through the recycling we have been collecting for the past week or so, all things we usually would leave for the City of Cincinnati to collect. We separated out what actually could be recycled by the City of Cincinnati and what had to be taken to an alternative recycling location. Basically, all glass, aluminum cans, plastic bottles/jugs with caps, and cardboard/paper products went to the campus recycling dumpster to be picked up by Rumpke, all the other plastics #1 through #5 were separated to go Whole Foods, and plastic grocery bags were gathered to be taken to Kroger. This definitely an effective roommate bonding experience.
