The only things I have been throwing out in the trash are food scraps. I would have loved to start composting for this challenge, however I am living in an apartment and moving in about a month and a half so I didn't want to have to deal with storing or moving a box of dirt.
Like I mentioned yesterday, my brother and his fiance have a compost in their kitchen! I went over there and they gave me a little lesson on how to compost. They have a special layered bin with worms in it that eat the food scraps and fiber and turn it into dirt. It is best if the food is ground up into very small pieces, so they freeze their food scraps until they have time to blend it all up and add it to the compost. Items that can be used include all vegetables, fruits, and starches, coffee grounds, egg shells, and plants. The worms also need fiber such as egg cartons, paper, cardboard, or dryer lint.
The spout is used to drain any liquid that is created through the composting process. Once a layer is full and the worms have eaten all the food and fiber, another layer is prepared and the worms will move to that layer through small holes in the trays.
