Long story short, I ordered soap nuts off amazon before this month began, but because I shipped it to my parents house and they went out of town for a few weeks the package got lost in the mail and I did not receive it until yesterday. I have yet to use these magical soap nuts but I'm excited to next time I do my laundry! (soo this weekend)
Soap nuts are actually shells of a berry that contain a natural cleaning agent. These berries grow on the Sapindus mukorossi (Soap Berry) tree in the Himalayas. The natural cleaning agent is called saponin. It does not create suds and bubbles like the soap we normally think of, but it breaks the surface tension in the water and washes away dirt from clothing.
You simple put a few soap nuts in a little cloth bag and toss it in the washing machine with the rest of your laundry. And they can be re-used up to 10 loads.
